Despite loads of speculation, including on my part, first baseman Jeff Clement was not recalled today to be the Pirates’ designated hitter in their next six interleague games in AL ballparks.
Clement, 28, was acquired in a trade in July of 2009 which sent Jack Wilson, Ian Snell, and $3,308,702.19 to the Seattle Mariners. The Pirates also received Ronny Cedeno, Nathan Adcock, Brett Lorin, and Aaron Pribanic in the trade. In 50 games this season in AAA Indianapolis, Clement is hitting for an OBP of .383, which leads the team, and has a slugging average of .528, also leading the team. His OPS of .911 is good enough to place 18th in the International League amongst players with at least 64 at bats, and 13th amongst players with at least 100 plate appearances.
