Last night, the Bucs were able to climb to two games out of first place by beating the Reds in dramatic fashion. Tonight, they look to get within one game of the division lead by beating the Royals and hoping the Reds lose.
The pitcher for the Pirates tonight will be lefty Erik Bedard, who has not performed his best since coming out of a game on May 9th due to back spasms. In four starts since then, Bedard has allowed 13 earned runs over 20.2 innings for an ERA of 5.66. His last start on June 2nd was a poor showing, going just three and two thirds innings, allowing five earned runs on five hits and three walks while notching five strikeouts. At home this season, Bedard has started five games, having a 2.42 ERA in five starts.
The Royals will send out righty Luke Hochevar. In 57 innings over 11 starts this season, Hochevar has a 6.63 earned run average, as well as a WHIP of 1.54. Hopefully the offense will make easy pickings of Hochevar, who has a 4.37 ERA in six road starts this year. This will be Hochevar’s first career start against the Pirates.
