Game 54: Pirates (27-26) @ Reds (30-23)

After the Pirates’ bats came alive in a 2-1 series win in Milwaukee, they were granted an off-day before taking on the Cincinnati Reds in a three-game set at Great American Ballpark.

Taking the hill for game one in the series for the Pirates will be righty A.J. Burnett.  In eight starts for the Bucs this season, Burnett has an ERA of 3.60 and has a WHIP of 1.24.  If you subtract the shaky start against the St. Louis Cardinals, Burnett has an ERA of 1.53 in 47 1/3 innings.  In his last start against the Reds, oddly enough, Burnett went seven full innings, giving up one unearned run on two hits, walking two and striking out three.   Burnett’s last road appearance against the Reds was when they were still inhabiting Cinergy Field.  In his career against Cincinnati, Burnett has started eight games, allowing 26 earned runs in 47 2/3 innings pitched for an ERA of 4.91 while having a WHIP of 1.43.

Homer Bailey will be the other combatant in the first game of the series.  Bailey has thrown 62.2 innings for the Reds this year with an ERA of 3.73 and a 1.26 WHIP in ten starts.  Bailey’s last start was against the Pirates, where he went the distance, allowing just one earned run on four hits and one walk, while striking out five, lowering his ERA from 4.19 to 3.73.  At home this season, Bailey performs worse than away, having a 4.13 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP in 24 innings, spread out across four starts.
