Game 47: Pirates (22-24) vs. Cubs (15-31)

The Pirates look for the sweep against the lowly Cubs in a 1:35 PM game today.

The second new member of the Pirates’ rotation, and the only southpaw, climbs the mound for the ultimate game of the intra-division three-game set. Surprisingly, the injury-ridden Bedard has only missed one start this season after suffering back spasms on May 9th against the Washington Nationals. Bedard has been rocked for eight runs in his past two games after suffering the back spasms, raising his ERA from 2.57 on May 9th to 3.52 on May 21st. Oddly enough, Bedard has never thrown a pitch against the Chicago Cubs in his career, one of only five teams that he has never pitched against. Bedard performs fairly well at home as opposed to on the road, going 0-2, which is a horrible indicator of his performance, with an ERA of 3.15 and a WHIP of 1.35.

Thanks to George of Born on Third, a Cubs blog, we have a preview of Matt Garza’s possible performance:
Consider this the Jekyll and Hyde member of the Cubs pitching staff. Garza can have no hit stuff one night, and the next night he has trouble location and he gets lit up. The majority of the “off” nights are on the road where Garza has looked uncomfortable and his numbers prove that. In four road starts this season Garza is 1-2 with a horrific 6.30 ERA, a major reason for that is the 11 walks in 20 innings that he has surrendered. Here is the good news for Garza, he likes seeing Pirates across the opponents jersey. In two career starts Garza is 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA, he has been knocked around a little as he has given up 16 hits in 14 innings but he has only issued two walks over those 14 innings while striking out 19. Garza has only had one start at PNC in his career and it was stellar as he earned the win going seven innings allowing no runs on four hits, while walking two and striking out seven.
