According to the Pirates’ beat writer for the Tribune-Review, Rob Biertempfel, the Pittsburgh Pirates are expected to bid on Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. Here is his self-made scouting video : http://sangysbbq.mlblogs.com/2011/11/08/yoenes-cespedes-video/
It is very unlikely, however, that Cespedes signs with the Pirates. After all, he is expected to garner a contract larger than Aroldis Chapman’s $30.5 million behemoth, and we all know the Pirates will never spend that kind of money. Because of this, the Pirates are also going to bid on Jorge Soler, another Cuban defector. Once again, this is unlikely because of the cost: due to how many teams will not be able to sign Cespedes, his bidding is expected to go up as much as $20 million or more. Basically, if the Pirates want to sign one of these two Cubans, the Nuttings need to open up their wallets.
